Cast Iron Grill Grates
These grates can retain significantly more heat than your standard cooking grates. Furthermore, they can transfer the heat to the meat in an efficient and even way. This means there is no risk that your meat will be fully cooked from the outside but raw on the inside. Also, those of you who enjoy seeing sear marks on their meat will enjoy using cast iron grates.
Stainless Steel Standard Grill Grates vs. Cast Iron Grill Grates
Cast iron grates can retain a higher level of heat although they require more time to heat up. They are also the ones in charge of those beautiful grill marks on your meat. However, they demand a lot of extra effort to be cleaned adequately. If you don’t maintain them on a regular basis, they will quickly get rusted or corroded.
Porcelain Cooking Grates
Porcelain Cooking Grates–they are a good choice if you want to make sure your meat is cooked evenly. They also won’t rust and are not hard to clean. However, you should watch out when you are cleaning a porcelain cooking grate because you can easily damage its surface.
Stainless Steel Standard Grill Grates vs. Porcelain Grates
They can both live up to the expectations of cooking your food the right way, and there is no fear of rust with either of them. On the other hand, you have to be much more careful cleaning porcelain grates as their surface can get easily damaged.
Infrared Cooking Grate
Although infrared energy can significantly cut the grilling time, you should watch over your food, so it doesn’t get toasted. Faster grilling time also means that there is a good chance that your meat will be raw on the inside. Furthermore, it is recommended to move it to another heat source to cook it properly. Infrared cooking grate durability is not their strongest suit either.
Stainless Steel Standard Grill Grates vs. Infrared Grates
Infrared grates can cook your food in a matter of seconds, but there is a real danger it will not be adequately cooked on the inside. Plus, the durability cannot be compared to stainless steel as infrared grates usually last no more than a couple of years.

Upgrade your Weber grill with the stainless steel replacement grates. These stamped and welded grates are a nice improvement over the original porcelain finished grates. When the porcelain finally fails, the grates rust and weaken. These stainless steel grates are great! The solid bar stainless steel version were too expensive for what they do. I recommend replacing the Flavorizer Bars and Grates at the same time - you only have to clean the cook box once and the grill looks great with the shiny new stainless steel replacements!
